Starting a trade business often looks simple from the outside, but the reality is a mix of uncertainty, pressure, and constant decision-making. Many tradies step into business thinking the answer is to work harder, take on more, and push through whatever comes their way. What often gets overlooked is how quickly that approach can lead to burnout, stress, and stalled progress.

Josh Prineas from Ecostream Plumbing shares a grounded and honest look at what it really takes to build a business from scratch. After drifting through different roles early on, Josh found his way into plumbing and quickly realised he wanted to work for himself. Like many tradies, he started with side jobs while still employed, gradually building momentum before making the call to go all in. Now two years into business, he has gone from uncertainty to confidently growing his operation, including stepping into hiring and leadership for the first time.

What stands out in Josh’s journey is not a perfect plan, but his willingness to take action before feeling fully ready. He speaks openly about pushing through discomfort, especially when it came to marketing himself, building relationships, and putting his name out there. Simple actions like door knocking and joining networking groups felt well outside his comfort zone at first, but over time became part of how he built consistent work and confidence.

A few key shifts that made the biggest difference for him:

  • Taking action before having it all figured out
  • Letting go of perfection and moving faster
  • Pushing through discomfort to build confidence and connections
  • Learning that growth comes from doing the uncomfortable things

The conversation also highlights the pressure many tradies place on themselves to get everything right. Josh reflects on the stress that came from trying to make everything perfect, whether it was quoting, systems, or the way work was delivered. Letting go of that need for perfection has been a key shift, allowing him to move faster, reduce stress, and focus on what actually matters in the business.

Another major turning point has been learning the role of boundaries. In the early stages, Josh worked long hours and believed that taking time off meant falling behind. Over time, he recognised that constantly pushing harder was actually reducing his productivity. By introducing simple boundaries, like set time off during the week and switching off on Sundays, he has been able to maintain energy, think more clearly, and show up better both in business and at home.

Josh’s story reflects a common path for tradies stepping into business. It is not about having everything figured out from day one, but about taking action, learning along the way, and making adjustments that support long-term growth.
