Steven Daniels used to think construction would just pay the bills while he figured out what came next. Instead, the weeks turned into years, the hours got longer, and one morning he physically couldn’t get out of bed. That was the moment he knew something had to change.
That breakdown pushed Steven to study positive psychology and coaching in London, and it eventually became Align 56 Coaching, where he now works with construction business owners, leadership teams, and site staff to build healthier relationships with work and with themselves.
In this episode with, Nic & Steven unpacks why burnout has quietly become a badge of honor in construction. Long hours get worn like a trophy, and for a lot of people it takes an illness or hitting the wall before they admit they can’t keep going. He talks about the value of non negotiable “me time,” even if it’s just 20 minutes, and why sprinting without recovery eventually catches up with everyone.
They also get into alcohol as the default switch off tool in trades culture, and why removing it or minimizing it only works when the motivation comes from within, not from someone else telling you to stop. Steven shares his approach to behavior change too, leaning on the idea of kaizen, small consistent improvements instead of the all or nothing New Year’s resolution mindset that fails most people within weeks.
One of the most honest parts of the conversation is when Steven and Nic talk about identity. So many business owners lose themselves in their work until they can’t answer a simple question: what did you enjoy before you were a business owner? Steven’s advice is to treat that question seriously, because knowing your values and your why is what makes real change stick, long before willpower or discipline ever could.
If you’ve ever felt like slowing down means falling behind, this episode is a reminder that rest isn’t a reward you earn after burnout. It’s something you’re allowed to build into your life now.
