The trade deficit isn’t a future problem. It’s already happening and most trade business owners are feeling it.
Ian Cooper from Workex Solutions shares what he’s seen firsthand after a decade on the tools. From trade school to manufacturing shutdowns, labour hire and project management, he’s worked alongside crews where the average age was 50 plus and hardly anyone in their 20s to bounce ideas off. That gap doesn’t happen by accident.
One of the biggest red flags discussed is the 48% apprenticeship churn rate. Nearly half of apprentices don’t finish. That means we’re not only struggling to get young people into trades, we’re losing them before they become qualified. At the same time, experienced tradespeople are retiring. The pipeline is shrinking from both ends.
The conversation also looks at why this might be happening. For years, the message to young people was university, white collar, get the safer job. Meanwhile, employers taking on apprentices haven’t exactly been flooded with support. When margins are tight and you’re juggling quoting, managing jobs, leading a team and staying compliant, bringing on a semi-skilled apprentice can feel like more pressure than help.
That pressure shows up in safety and compliance too. SWMS that barely get read. Permit books floating around site. One safety officer trying to cover thousands of workers. It’s not that people don’t care. It’s that the system makes it hard to do it well.
Out of that frustration came Workex, a digital reporting and compliance platform built for tradies. The goal isn’t to complicate things further. It’s to reduce admin, simplify processes and help crews stay safer on site.
When you step back, all of it ties together. Fewer experienced tradespeople. Apprentices dropping out. Employers stretched thin. Compliance becoming heavier. It is not one single issue. It is a combination that is quietly reshaping the industry. Trade business owners who want stable teams and sustainable growth cannot afford to ignore it.
